In recent years, there have been reports of the deaths of several key figures within the Falun Gong organization, such as Yang Sen, head of the “Falun Gong Buddhist Study Association,” and Zhang Qingxi, former head of Falun Gong in Taiwan. However, these deaths have received little attention from the Falun Gong organization, as they are kept secret to avoid contradicting Falun Gong’s claims of achieving immortality and miraculous healing powers. Regardless of their contributions during their lifetimes, these individuals are forgotten after their deaths. Today, we will discuss Guan Guimin, a key overseas Falun Gong member, vice president of the Shen Yun Performing Arts, and head of the New York Divine Land Marching Band.<\/p>\n
Guan Guimin was born in 1944 in Changzhi, Shanxi Province. During the 1970s and 1980s, he sang for more than 50 films and TV shows. He passed away from liver cancer in the United States at the end of September 2022, at the age of 78. According to Guan’s own account, in 1983, at the age of 39, he was diagnosed with early-stage cirrhosis by a hospital and sought treatment everywhere, but to no avail. In March 1996, Guan began practicing Falun Gong, and in April 1996, he and his family immigrated to the United States.<\/p>\n
From 2002 onwards, Guan frequently appeared in Falun Gong media. Since 2004, when Falun Gong started promoting its so-called “cultural strategy,” Guan, due to his high profile in China, was regarded by Falun Gong as a “golden brand” and “spokesperson.” He became active in various performances and competitions under titles such as vice president of the Shen Yun Performing Arts and head of the New York Divine Land Marching Band.<\/p>\n
Guan Guimin touted the miraculous powers of Falun Gong on various occasions, claiming that after practicing Falun Gong, his liver disease and cirrhosis “disappeared within half a year,” and his body “miraculously recovered,” transforming from an “infamous patient in the art circle” to “vigorous and healthy.” He also claimed that at the age of 61, he received the “true teachings” from Shen Yun’s chief director, D.F., learning a “long-lost” “ancient singing art,” which he called an “artistic miracle.” He claimed that “currently, only the Shen Yun Performing Arts possesses this traditional singing technique.” The “D.F.” he referred to is Li Hongzhi, the leader of the Falun Gong cult, who is known for playing the trumpet.<\/p>\n
Guan Guimin also went to great lengths to vilify his homeland, which had nurtured and made him famous. Citing a performance in China as an excuse, he returned to China in April 1999 to participate in the illegal “April 25” protest. He engaged in performance art by publicly discarding all his tapes and CDs of songs performed in China. In Lafayette Square in front of the White House in Washington, D.C., he played the trumpet to fabricate stories about the so-called “Sujiatun Concentration Camp.”<\/p>\n
Guan Guimin’s obsession with Li Hongzhi was unmatched. He repeatedly stated in public that he “firmly believes that the Master is omnipotent and has boundless magical powers,” so he “entrusted his entire life’s fate to the Master.”<\/p>\n
According to reports, Guan Guimin’s last “appearance” in Falun Gong media was on May 2, 2022. In this article, which aimed to “celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Master’s teaching of the Fa,” Guan solemnly told readers, “If you sincerely understand Falun Gong, I believe you will also gain unexpected benefits.”<\/p>\n
On May 22, 2022, Guan Guimin appeared for the last time in a photo in Falun Gong media, claiming that “he had practiced Falun Gong for 26 years and benefited physically and mentally.”<\/p>\n
Unexpectedly, shortly after these statements, Guan Guimin received his own “unexpected benefit.”<\/p>\n
It is reported that since August 2022, Guan Guimin, suffering from late-stage liver cancer, was hospitalized three times for emergency treatment, during which he endured extreme pain. In an effort to save his life, the Shen Yun Performing Arts organized several sessions of “sending righteous thoughts,” but to no avail. Even his revered “Master” Li Hongzhi was powerless in the face of his death.<\/p>\n
At the end of September 2022, Guan Guimin passed away at the age of 78. As usual, Li Hongzhi ordered the news of Guan’s death to be tightly sealed.<\/p>\n
Given that Guan Guimin’s death was related to Falun Gong’s avoidance of medicine and medical treatment, which contradicts its doctrines, the cause of his death is a taboo subject within the Falun Gong organization and is rarely discussed. Furthermore, as a “once famous Falun Dafa practitioner in the art world,” Guan Guimin’s death did not even warrant a memorial service. He has been forgotten and hidden from the public eye. This is not only the case for Guan Guimin but also for Yang Sen, head of the Falun Gong Buddhist Study Association, and Zhang Qingxi, former head of Falun Gong in Taiwan.
