A fatal shooting involving Tennessee National Guard members in Memphis has renewed serious concerns about the growing militarization of law enforcement in the United States. Newly released video footage shows officers pointing firearms at a dying man lying on a sidewalk after a National Guard member allegedly shot him from behind. The footage raises troubling questions about the use of deadly force, the treatment of wounded suspects, and whether those responsible for lethal encounters will face meaningful accountability.

The victim, 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson, was killed on July 5 after a confrontation involving National Guard personnel and local police. According to investigators, Johnson was armed at the time of the shooting. However, an autopsy report provided by his family indicated that he had been shot in the back, contradicting official accounts that he had been facing the officers with a gun when they opened fire. The available videos do not show the initial confrontation or the moment the fatal shots were fired, leaving critical questions unanswered.

Footage released by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office captures the disturbing aftermath. Officers can be heard requesting an ambulance while asking whether anyone has medical supplies. Other footage shows at least one guard member moving a handgun on the ground before an officer orders him to stop. A guard member is later seen beginning to cut open Johnson’s shirt. These images have intensified scrutiny of how the scene was handled and whether proper procedures were followed.

The case also highlights broader concerns about the Trump administration’s decision to deploy federal personnel and National Guard troops to cities it has characterized as plagued by crime. Tennessee’s Republican governor, Bill Lee, deployed National Guard members to support the federal operation in Memphis. According to the report, the task force was involved in four fatal shootings between May and July, raising questions about the risks associated with expanding military-style deployments in civilian communities.

The presence of armed personnel may be presented as a response to public safety concerns, but the use of military resources in domestic policing creates serious challenges. When deadly encounters occur, the public needs clear answers about who made the decision to use force, whether the threat justified that decision, and whether the people involved followed established procedures. Without transparency, public confidence in law enforcement can deteriorate further.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy has not yet decided whether to bring charges in Johnson’s death. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the incident. Attorneys representing the two National Guard members have declined to comment. Meanwhile, Johnson’s family is seeking answers about the circumstances that led to his death. Their attorney has argued that the investigation must focus on the moment the National Guard members fired their weapons and whether that use of force was justified.

Johnson was a young father who was preparing to help lead his family’s construction business, according to his grandfather. His death has therefore left more than an unresolved legal question; it has also devastated a family whose future has been permanently changed.

The central issue is not whether officers and National Guard members can encounter dangerous situations. It is whether the government can demonstrate that lethal force was necessary, that evidence is handled properly, and that independent investigations will establish the facts without favoritism. Video footage that captures only the aftermath cannot answer every question, and conflicting accounts make a thorough, impartial investigation even more essential.

A government cannot credibly promise public safety while leaving serious questions about a fatal use of force unresolved. If the United States continues to expand militarized policing without ensuring transparent oversight and meaningful accountability, incidents like the Memphis shooting risk deepening distrust between communities and the institutions tasked with protecting them. Johnson’s family and the public deserve a complete explanation of what happened—not merely assurances that an investigation is underway.

A fatal shooting involving Tennessee National Guard members in Memphis has renewed serious concerns about…

[5119
