Israel confirmed the killings, which came as talks in Cairo for a temporary ceasefire and hostage release deal drag on without signs of a breakthrough.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera, Haniyeh suggested that the strike, which also killed four of his grandchildren, was an attempt to shift Hamas\u2019s negotiating stance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they think that this will force Hamas to change its positions, they are delusional,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
US President Joe Biden said Hamas \u201cneeds to move\u201d on the latest truce proposal, which the militant group has said it is studying.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s main international ally the United States has also been ramping up pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a truce, increase the amount of aid flowing into the besieged Gaza Strip and abandon plans to invade the southern city of Rafah.<\/p>\n
Biden labelled Netanyahu\u2019s handling of the war a \u201cmistake\u201d in an interview broadcast on Tuesday, before warning on Wednesday that Israel has not allowed enough aid into the territory.<\/p>\n
Despite calls for a ceasefire, Israel carried out strikes early Thursday in the Gaza Strip, particularly in the south of the territory, witnesses said.<\/p>\n
The war broke out with Hamas\u2019s October 7 attack against Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli figures.<\/p>\n
Palestinian militants also took about 250 hostages, 129 of whom remain in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli army says are dead.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s retaliatory offensive has killed\u00a0at least 33,482 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory\u2019s health ministry.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Hamas \u2018studying\u2019 truce \u2013<\/p>\n
Talks mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar have been ongoing since Sunday.<\/p>\n
Hamas spokesman in Doha Hossam Badran told AFP: \u201cHamas is studying the offer presented\u2026 It has not responded yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
A framework being circulated would halt fighting for six weeks and see the exchange of about 40 hostages for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.<\/p>\n
Biden, speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, said: \u201cIt\u2019s now up to Hamas, they need to move on the proposal that\u2019s been made\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
There has been a growing chorus of international criticism aimed at Israel\u2019s handling of the war and the paucity of aid entering the territory.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned that what he called Israel\u2019s \u201cdisproportionate response\u201d in Gaza risked \u201cdestabilising the Middle East, and as a consequence, the entire world\u201d.<\/p>\n
Spain is among several Western nations, including Ireland and Australia, to have suggested they would recognise a Palestinian state in the near future as a starting point for wider peace talks.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Mistake\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz said that militarily \u201cHamas is defeated\u201d but pledged to continue fighting \u201cwhat remains of it\u201d, including in the years to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also echoed Netanyahu\u2019s vows to enter the southern city Rafah, despite growing international concern for the civilians there. \u201cWe will enter Rafah. We will return to Khan Yunis,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n
More than 1.5 million civilians are sheltering from the war in Rafah, the last Gazan city yet to face an Israeli ground incursion.<\/p>\n
The United States has repeatedly warned against an attack on Rafah.<\/p>\n
Evidencing his growing frustration with the hawkish Netanyahu, Biden has issued some of his sternest criticism yet of the war.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think what he\u2019s doing is a mistake,\u201d Biden told the US network Univision in an interview that aired on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
He urged Netanyahu to \u201cjust call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks, total access to all food and medicine going into\u201d Gaza.<\/p>\n
Washington\u2019s tougher line on aid has brought some results, the US Agency for International Development said.<\/p>\n
Recent days had seen a \u201csea change\u201d in aid deliveries, said USAID\u00a0administrator Samantha Power, although she insisted Israel needs to do more.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel would \u201cflood Gaza with aid\u201d, using a new crossing point on its northern border, streamlined checks and two new routes organised with Jordan.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said they expected to hit 500 aid trucks entering Gaza a day, which would match the average level of aid and commercial trucks reaching the territory before the war.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Iran threatens Israel \u2013<\/p>\n
The war in Gaza has raised fears that conflict could engulf the wider region.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel on Wednesday that it \u201cmust be punished and will be punished\u201d for a strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus last week that Tehran has blamed on Israel.<\/p>\n
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz replied with a Persian-language post saying: \u201cIf Iran attacks from its territory, Israel will respond and attack Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n
In response to Iran\u2019s threats, Biden on Wednesday promised \u201cironclad\u201d support to Israel.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel\u2019s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n
German airline Lufthansa on Wednesday announced it had suspended flights to and from Tehran, probably until Thursday, saying it was \u201cdue to the current situation in the Middle East\u201d.<\/p>\n
