Beijing\u2019s third highest-ranking official Zhao Leji \u2014 a member of the powerful Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s Politburo \u2014 made a goodwill visit to the nuclear-armed North this week as the two countries mark 75 years of diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n
China is North Korea\u2019s most important economic benefactor and diplomatic ally, obstructing US-led efforts at the UN Security Council alongside Russia to impose stricter sanctions on Kim Jong Un\u2019s government in response to its increased weapons tests.<\/p>\n
Zhao met Kim on Saturday, after attending an opening ceremony on Friday for the \u201cyear of China-Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea Friendship\u201d in Pyongyang on Friday, according to Beijing\u2019s state news agency Xinhua.<\/p>\n
Zhao told Kim that China is \u201cwilling to strengthen development linkage and deepen bilateral cooperation with the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea,\u201d according to Xinhua, using the North\u2019s official name.<\/p>\n
Zhao told Kim that China is willing to \u201cpromote bilateral practical and mutually beneficial cooperation to achieve new results, to continue to give strong mutual support and to safeguard the common interests of both sides\u201d.<\/p>\n
Kim in turn told Zhao the North was keen to \u201cdeepen the traditional friendship and write a new chapter in Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea-China relations,\u201d according to Xinhua.<\/p>\n
A photo published by Xinhua showed Zhao and Kim smiling and shaking hands.<\/p>\n
Zhao is China\u2019s third highest-ranking official, behind President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Eternal friendship\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Zhao earlier emphasised the need to \u201copen up a new chapter of China-DPRK friendship along with the times\u201d, in a speech at the opening ceremony on Friday, which he attended alongside North Korean counterpart Choe Ryong Hae, according to North Korea\u2019s official Korean Central News Agency.<\/p>\n
North Korea\u2019s Choe said on Friday that the two countries\u2019 relationship \u201chas greeted a new heyday under the wise leadership\u201d of their leaders, KCNA said.<\/p>\n
Choe and Zhao were seen sitting next to each other watching performances by what KCNA said were\u00a0\u201cprestigious art troupes\u201d of the two nations at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre, AFP footage showed.<\/p>\n
Some performers wore colourful traditional Korean and Chinese garments, and what appeared to be the final\u00a0moment of the event highlighted a massive image of the countries\u2019 flags, accompanied by the phrase \u201ceternal friendship\u201d.<\/p>\n
South Korean local media reports said this week that Zhao\u2019s trip could include planning for\u00a0Kim\u2019s next potential state visit to Beijing.<\/p>\n
Kim last met President Xi in 2019 before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, making the Pyongyang meeting between Zhao and Choe one of the most high-level meetings in years.<\/p>\n
The Chinese delegation was seen off by senior North Korean officials as they boarded their plane departing Pyongyang on Saturday, Xinhua said.<\/p>\n
North Korea\u2019s rhetoric towards the South has been in stark contrast to the friendly relations with Beijing.<\/p>\n
This year, Kim has declared Seoul his country\u2019s \u201cprincipal enemy\u201d, jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and threatened war over \u201ceven 0.001 mm\u201d of territorial infringement.<\/p>\n
China\u2019s state-run news agency Xinhua said\u00a0Friday that Zhao and Choe\u00a0discussed the \u201csituation on the Korean peninsula\u201d, and Zhao expressed Beijing\u2019s willingness to \u201cintensify legislative exchanges and cooperation\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
