{"id":2948,"date":"2024-04-14T01:27:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-14T01:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=2948"},"modified":"2024-04-14T01:27:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-14T01:27:00","slug":"sydney-mall-attacker-identified-nothing-to-suggest-terror-motive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=2948","title":{"rendered":"Sydney mall attacker identified, &#8216;nothing&#8217; to suggest terror motive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em><small>The attack occurred as people were doing their shopping at the Westfield Bondi Junction mall in Sydney &#8211; Copyright WHITE HOUSE\/AFP Adam Schultz<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Laura CHUNG<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Australian police have identified a 40-year-old man who suffered from mental illness as the perpetrator of a Sydney \u00a0shopping centre stabbing rampage that killed six people and left several more in a critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>New South Wales police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said Sunday the man had come from the northeast state of Queensland and was known to law enforcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still to this point nothing that we have, no information we have received, no evidence we have recovered no intelligence that we have gathered that would suggest that this was driven by any particular motivation, ideology or otherwise,\u201d said Cooke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that the offender in the matter suffered from, suffers from, mental health.\u201d The 40-year-old man \u2014 who was shot dead by a senior policewoman at the scene Saturday \u2014 was named as Joel Cauchi.<\/p>\n<p>A Facebook profile said he came from the Toowoomba, near Brisbane, and had attended a local high school and university.<\/p>\n<p>A distinctive grey, red and yellow dragon tattoo on his right arm was used to help identify him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He is believed to have come to Sydney about a month ago and hired a small storage unit in the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It contained personal belongings, including a boogie board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police are still trying to understand whether those attacked were chosen at random.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Five women and one man were killed during Cauchi\u2019s Saturday afternoon rampage, which took place in a bustling shopping centre in Sydney\u2019s Bondi Junction neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>Among the injured was a nine-month-old baby who was said to be in a \u201cserious but stable condition in hospital\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the victims are said to have no family in Australia and attempts are being made to contact the relatives overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australians \u2014 who are largely unaccustomed to incidents of violent crime \u2014 were struggling to understand an \u201cunspeakable\u201d attack that is \u201creally just beyond comprehension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople going about their Saturday afternoon shopping should be safe, shouldn\u2019t be at risk. But tragically, we saw a loss of life, and people will be grieving for loved ones today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also know there are many people still in hospital dealing with recovery, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albanese said he had received messages from US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He again hailed the policewoman who shot Cauchi dead as a hero.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cwonderful inspector\u201d, he said \u201cran into danger by herself\u2026 without thinking about the risks to herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside the shopping centre early on Sunday, a collection of flowers started to build.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One white ribbon wrapped around a bunch of flowers simply said \u201cRIP\u201d with a love heart drawn in black marker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> Sydney mall attacker identified, &#8216;nothing&#8217;
