Ukrainian troops defending the frontline town of Chasiv Yar under relentless Russian attack have received additional drones and weaponry, the commander-in-chief of Kyiv\u2019s armed forces, Oleksandr Syrsky, said Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Syrsky wrote on Facebook after visiting troops defending the battered town that \u201cmeasures were taken to significantly strengthen the brigades with ammunition, drones, and electronic warfare equipment\u201d.<\/p>\n

Russia is \u201cconcentrating its efforts to break through our defences west of Bakhmut,\u201d Syrsky said, referring to the destroyed town in the Donetsk region captured by Russia last May.<\/p>\n

He said Russia aims to \u201cseize the town of Chasiv Yar\u201d, which lies 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of Bakhmut.<\/p>\n

Chasiv Yar has been heavily destroyed by shelling and Ukraine has said it is now under \u201cconstant fire\u201d.<\/p>\n

Syrksky said Russia\u2019s military leadership has set a deadline to capture Chasiv Yar by May 9, when Russia marks Soviet victory in World War II.<\/p>\n

Russia then wants to \u201ccreate conditions for further advancement\u201d to the large city of Kramatorsk and the surrounding area, Syrsky warned.<\/p>\n

Overnight, Russia shelled the eastern Kharkiv region, killing two people in a village near the border.<\/p>\n

The energy ministry said Russia shelled energy infrastructure in the Kharkiv region, causing power outages and problems with gas supply.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
