Explosions in Jerusalem’s night sky as Iran launched its first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory – Copyright AFP Sajjad HUSSAIN<\/small><\/em><\/p>\nJ\u00e9r\u00f4me RIVET, Ramin KHANIZADEH<\/em><\/p>\nIran on Sunday urged Israel not to retaliate militarily to an unprecedented attack overnight, which Tehran presented as a justified response to a strike that destroyed its consulate building in Damascus earlier this month.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe matter can be deemed concluded,\u201d Iran\u2019s mission to the United Nations said in a post on X just a few hours after the start of the operation late Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran\u2019s response will be considerably more severe,\u201d the Iranian mission warned.<\/p>\n
No Iranian leaders have spoken out to justify the attack, which marked the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israeli territory.<\/p>\n
Late Saturday, Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards Corps announced that they had launched \u201cdozens of drones and missiles\u201d towards military sites on Israeli territory.<\/p>\n
\u201cIran\u2019s military action was in response to the Zionist regime\u2019s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus,\u201d the Iranian mission to the UN said.<\/p>\n
The attack, according to the mission, was \u201cconducted on the strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to legitimate defense\u201d.<\/p>\n
However Israel\u2019s army said it had shot 99 percent of the drones and missiles with the help of the United States and other allies, declaring Iran\u2019s attack \u201cfoiled\u201d.<\/p>\n
Experts have suggested that Saturday\u2019s slow-moving drone attack was calibrated to represent a show of power but also allow some wiggle room.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt appears that Iran telegraphed its attack on Israel to demonstrate it can strike using different capabilities to complicate the (Israeli army\u2019s) ability to neutralise the assault but also to provide an off ramp to pause escalation,\u201d said Nishank Motwani, senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Washington.<\/p>\n

Over the last two weeks, the Iranian authorities repeatedly vowed to \u201cpunish\u201d Israel after the death of seven Guards including two generals of the Quds Force in an attack that levelled the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.<\/p>\n
Iran has blamed Israel for the attack.<\/p>\n
In the days after the strike, Iran\u2019s Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel will be \u201cslapped for that action\u201d.<\/p>\n
Since a revolution in 1979 in Iran which toppled the US-backed Shah, Israel has been the sworn enemy of the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n
Iran has often called for the destruction of Israel, with support of the Palestinian cause one of the pillars of the Islamic revolution.<\/p>\n
However Tehran had also refrained from a direct attack on Israel \u2014 until Saturday.<\/p>\n
Instead, it has backed members of the so-called \u201cAxis of Resistance\u201d against Israel, including Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah and Yemen\u2019s Huthi rebels, since the outbreak of war in Gaza between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7.<\/p>\n
Hours before the strikes on Saturday, Iran seized an Israeli-linked container ship in the Gulf which Washington called \u201can act of piracy\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Next slap will be fiercer\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
During the night, Tehran also warned the United States, urging them to \u201cstay away\u201d from its conflict with Israel.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny threat by the terrorist government of America and the Zionist regime from any country will result in a reciprocal and proportionate response,\u201d the Revolutionary Guards warned in a statement early Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf necessary\u201d, Tehran \u201cwill not hesitate to take defensive measures to protect its interests against any aggressive military action,\u201d Iran\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe next slap will be fiercer,\u201d warned the new mural unveiled overnight in Tehran\u2019s Palestine Square, where a few thousand people gathered during the night shouting \u201cDeath to Israel\u201d and \u201cDeath to America\u201d.<\/p>\n
Before Tehran launched its attack, Israel warned Iran that it would suffer \u201cthe consequences for choosing to escalate the situation any further\u201d.<\/p>\n
Israel has not revealed what a potential response would look like.<\/p>\n
An Israeli attack on Iran\u2019s territory, possibly targeting military or nuclear sites, could not be ruled out, according to experts.<\/p>\n
As a precaution, Tehran\u2019s Mehrabad airport, which is mainly dedicated to domestic flights, will remain closed on Sunday until 12 pm (0830 GMT), according to the Mehr news agency.<\/p>\n
Several international airlines have suspended flights over Iranian airspace.<\/p>\n
Countries including Russia and France have also asked their citizens to avoid travelling to Iran and Israel.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
