Displaced Palestinians on the coastal road north, hoping to return to Gaza City – Copyright AFP DAVID GRAY<\/small><\/em><\/p>\nThousands of Gazans flooded the coast road north on Sunday after hearing that several people managed to cross a closed checkpoint towards Gaza City, despite Israel denying it was open.<\/p>\n
An AFP journalist saw mothers holding their children\u2019s hands and families piling onto donkey carts with their luggage as they made the journey.<\/p>\n
They hoped to cross a military checkpoint on Al-Rashid road south of Gaza City, but the Israeli army told AFP that reports the route was open were \u201cnot true\u201d.<\/p>\n
On the other side, desperate families waited\u00a0for their loved ones in the rubble of the battered main city in the Palestinian territory.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud Awdeh said he was waiting for his wife, who has been in the southern city of Khan Yunis since the start of the war on October 7.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe told me over the phone that people are leaving the southern part and heading to the north,\u201d Awdeh said.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe told me she\u2019s waiting at the checkpoint until the army agrees to let her head to the north,\u201d he said, hoping she would be able to cross safely.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Refuge in Rafah \u2013<\/p>\n
During the day rumours also spread that the Israeli army was allowing women, children and men over 50 to go to the north, a claim denied by the army.<\/p>\n
Since Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attack, the army has besieged the territory, telling Gazans to leave some areas and preventing them from moving across the narrow strip.<\/p>\n
More than 1.5 million Palestinians have taken refuge in the southern city Rafah, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n
Several Gazans said they came under attack on the route and AFP footage showed people ducking for cover.<\/p>\n
The Palestinian official news agency Wafa said \u201cIsraeli occupation forces bomb(ed) displaced Palestinians as they were trying to return to the north of Gaza Strip through Al Rasheed street.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wafa shared a video on X which AFP has not verified showing people running away from a blast.<\/p>\n
Nour, a displaced Gazan, told AFP: \u201cWhen we arrived at the (Israeli) checkpoint, they would let women pass or stop them, but they shot at men so we had to return, we didn\u2019t want to die.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Israeli military did not offer a comment when asked by AFP.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Too little too late\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in Gaza the fighting continued on Sunday after Iran launched\u00a0a huge drone and missile attack on Israel overnight.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s first-ever direct assault on Israeli territory came in retaliation for a deadly strike on Tehran\u2019s consulate in the Syrian capital.<\/p>\n
The strike that Iran blamed on Israel left seven Revolutionary Guards dead, including two generals.<\/p>\n
But in Rafah on Sunday, Palestinians told AFP they were underwhelmed by Iran\u2019s attack on Israel.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Iranian response came so late, after 190 days of war,\u201d Khaled Al Nems told AFP. \u201cYou can see our suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTheir response is too little too late,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Walid Al Kurdi, a displaced Palestinian living in Rafah, said that \u201cIran\u2019s attack on Israel is not really our business\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe only thing we care about is going back to our homes,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are waiting for the coming 48 hours to see if (Israel) responds to Iran, or if they are playing with us and want to distract attention away from Rafah.\u201d<\/p>\n
Israel has said it plans to send ground forces into Rafah to eradicate remaining Hamas militants there.<\/p>\n
Amid makeshift stalls in Rafah\u2019s crowded streets, Ahmed Abu Awdeh, another displaced person, said he \u201chopes Iran will pressure Israel to stop the war\u201d in Gaza.<\/p>\n
\u201cOtherwise, let them (the Israelis) strike not only Iran but also Syria, Jordan, and all Arab countries\u201d for not being able to end the war, he added.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
