Joseph Haggar, a Lebanese immigrant, founded the iconic Haggar men\u2019s clothing brand in 1926.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe settled in Texas, and he started this pant company that was extremely successful in the 20th century,\u201d says Diana Abouali, director of the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. \u201cHe also revolutionized the way that pants and clothing were mass produced.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fa-container\">\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The tiled courtyard at the Arab American National Museum features exhibits detailing the history, arts and scientific achievements of the Arab world in previous eras, Dearborn, Michigan, Feb. 29, 2024.\" src=\"https:\/\/gdb.voanews.com\/01000000-0a00-0242-7a1b-08dc57fc1aa5_w250_r1_s.png\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ico ico-fullscreen ico--media-expand ico--rounded\"\/>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<span class=\"caption\">The tiled courtyard at the Arab American National Museum features exhibits detailing the history, arts and scientific achievements of the Arab world in previous eras, Dearborn, Michigan, Feb. 29, 2024.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fa-container\">\n<p>An exhibit at the museum is dedicated to Haggar, whose pants were worn by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson. Stories like Haggar\u2019s are integral to the museum\u2019s mission to demonstrate how Arab Americans have been part of the American fabric since the late 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe communicate the American narrative in the voices of Arab Americans. They express their experiences in their own words,\u201d Abouali says. \u201cThis provides people with a more authentic and real representation of what it means to be Arab American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The museum attempts to share the full range of the Arab American experience, including the journey to America, home and work life, and service in the U.S. Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fa-container\">\n<p>The diverse offerings include an exhibit about the hundreds of Syrian and Lebanese immigrants who owned homesteads in North Dakota between 1890 and World War I. Thousands of descendants of those pioneers still live in North Dakota. And what little Americans do know about Arabs is often informed by negative stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe obvious one would be the angry Arab, the terrorist Arab, the being afraid of the Arab that comes from abroad. I think that&#8217;s the very obvious one, but it&#8217;s a bit overplayed,\u201d says Jasmine Hawamdeh, director of arts and culture at the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, a civil rights advocacy group. \u201cAnd I think one of the more harmful stereotypes that currently exists in American media is the oppressed Arab woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fa-container\">\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The first Arabs came to America in search of economic opportunity and many became door-to-door peddlers and grocers, Arab American National Museum, Dearborn, Michigan, Feb. 29, 2024.\" src=\"https:\/\/gdb.voanews.com\/01000000-0a00-0242-3464-08dc57fc23dc_w250_r1_s.png\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ico ico-fullscreen ico--media-expand ico--rounded\"\/>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<span class=\"caption\">The first Arabs came to America in search of economic opportunity and many became door-to-door peddlers and grocers, Arab American National Museum, Dearborn, Michigan, Feb. 29, 2024.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fa-container\">\n<p>The museum tries to correct false narratives about Arab Americans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re not always responding to misconceptions and narrative, although that&#8217;s a major part of our work and a major sort of impetus for creating a museum like this,\u201d Abouali says, \u201cbut also we&#8217;re sort of presenting ourselves, as we are, unapologetically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arab Americans are a diverse community that come from 22 Arab countries stretching from northern Africa to western Asia.
