Air defence systems over several Iranian cities were activated, state media reported, after the country\u2019s official broadcaster said explosions were heard near the city of Isfahan.<\/p>\n
Israel had previously warned it would hit back after Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel over the weekend. Most of them were intercepted.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Fars news agency reported \u201cthree explosions\u201d were heard near the Shekari army airbase in the northwest of Isfahan province, while Iran\u2019s space agency spokesman Hossein Dalirian said \u201cseveral\u201d drones had been \u201csuccessfully shot down\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no reports of a missile attack for now,\u201d Dalirian said on social media platform X.<\/p>\n
Nuclear facilities in Isfahan were reported to be \u201ccompletely secure\u201d, Iran\u2019s Tasnim news agency reported, citing \u201creliable sources\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
ABC and CBS News reported the strikes had been carried out by Israel, quoting US officials. There was no immediate comment from the White House or Pentagon.<\/p>\n
CNN quoted an official as saying the target of the Israeli attack was not nuclear.<\/p>\n
The Israeli military told AFP: \u201cWe don\u2019t have a comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2013 Flights suspended \u2013<\/p>\n
Over the weekend, Iran carried out its first attack to directly target regional foe Israel.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Israel, backed by its allies, intercepted most of the 300 missiles and drones launched by Iran, and suffered no deaths.<\/p>\n
It launched its attack in retaliation for an April 1 strike on its consulate in Damascus that was widely blamed on Israel.<\/p>\n
Iran is a key backer of the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Fears of a major regional spillover from the Gaza war have soared since the Iran attack on Israel.<\/p>\n
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to destroy Hamas over its October 7 attack that started the Gaza war, has stressed that Israel \u201creserves the right to protect itself\u201d against Iran.<\/p>\n
The United States, Israel\u2019s main ally and military supplier, has made clear it would not join a reprisal attack on Iran, but unveiled sanctions against people and entities involved in producing the drones deployed in the Iranian assault.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are holding Iran accountable,\u201d US President Joe Biden said Thursday, announcing the measures after the European Union said it would also sanction Iran\u2019s drone programme.<\/p>\n
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian had warned that Tehran would make Israel \u201cregret\u201d any attack on the Islamic republic.<\/p>\n
Flights were suspended across swathes of Iran on Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIran\u2019s air defence has been activated in the skies of several provinces of the country,\u201d Tehran\u2019s official IRNA news agency said.<\/p>\n
Mehr news agency reported that \u201cflights to Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz, and airports in the west, northwest and southwest have been suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n
Flight-tracking software showed commercial flights avoiding western Iran, including Isfahan, and skirting Tehran to the north and east.\u00a0<\/p>\n
There was no immediate comment from Dubai\u2019s Emirates airline, which was operating several of the planes.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Mideast \u2018on a precipice\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Blasts were also reported in southern Syria, according to a local activist group.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were strikes on a Syrian army radar position,\u201d said Rayan Maarouf, who runs the Suwayda24 anti-government website that covers news from Sweida province in the south.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres painted a dark picture of the situation in the Middle East, warning that spiralling tensions over the war in Gaza and Iran\u2019s attack on Israel could devolve into a \u201cfull-scale regional conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Middle East is on a precipice. Recent days have seen a perilous escalation \u2014 in words and deeds,\u201d Guterres told the Security Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOne miscalculation, one miscommunication, one mistake, could lead to the unthinkable \u2014 a full-scale regional conflict that would be devastating for all involved,\u201d he said, calling on all parties to exercise \u201cmaximum restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n
