Colombian President Gustavo Petro has taken a critical stance on the Gaza assault that followed an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 – Copyright AFP Raul ARBOLEDA<\/small><\/em><\/p>\nDavid Salazar and Andrea Tosta<\/em><\/p>\nPresident Gustavo Petro said Wednesday that Colombia will sever diplomatic ties with Israel, whose leader he described as \u201cgenocidal\u201d in its war in Gaza.<\/p>\n
\u201cTomorrow (Thursday) diplomatic relations with the state of Israel will be severed\u2026 for having a genocidal president,\u201d Petro told a May Day rally in Bogota \u2014 referring to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n
Petro has been a harsh critic of the assault on Gaza that followed an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7.<\/p>\n
That attack resulted in the deaths of some 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli figures.<\/p>\n
Hamas militants also took about 250 hostages, 129 of whom remain in Gaza, including 34 Israel says are presumed dead.<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 34,568 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Petro told thousands of supporters that the world cannot accept \u201cgenocide, the extermination of an entire people.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf Palestine dies, humanity dies,\u201d he said to loud applause from the crowd, some of whom flew pro-Palestinian banners.<\/p>\n
Israel responded by describing Petro as \u201canti-Semitic and hateful,\u201d saying his stance amounted to handing a reward to Hamas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Colombian president has promised to reward Hamas murderers and rapists \u2014 and today he delivered,\u201d Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on X.<\/p>\n
\u201cHistory will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to stand by the most despicable monsters humanity has known, who burned babies, murdered children, raped women and kidnapped innocent civilians,\u201d Katz added.<\/p>\n
Colombia has joined Bolivia, Belize and South Africa in severing ties with Israel. Several other countries have recalled diplomats.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Fueling anti-Semitism\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
In October, days after the start of the war, Israel announced it was \u201chalting security exports\u201d to Colombia after Petro accused Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of using language about the people of Gaza similar to what the \u201cNazis said of the Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n
Israel at the time accused Petro of \u201cexpressing support for the atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists, fueling anti-Semitism,\u201d and summoned Colombia\u2019s ambassador.<\/p>\n
Bogota subsequently demanded that Israel\u2019s envoy leave the South American country.<\/p>\n
Petro, Colombia\u2019s first leftist president, has also asserted that \u201cdemocratic peoples cannot allow Nazism to reestablish itself in international politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
In February, he suspended Israeli weapons purchases after dozens of people died in a scramble for food aid in the war-torn Palestinian territory \u2014 an event he said was \u201ccalled genocide and recalls the Holocaust.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colombia\u2019s armed forces, engaged in a decades-long conflict with leftist guerrillas, rightwing paramilitaries and drug cartels, use Israeli-made weapons and aircraft.<\/p>\n
The country has a history of strong diplomatic and military relations with Israel and the United States.<\/p>\n
Petro had come out in support of Brazil\u2019s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who also drew the ire of Israel by saying its Gaza campaign \u201cisn\u2019t a war, it\u2019s a genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n
Colombia and Brazil supported South Africa\u2019s complaint against Israel to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, alleging the Gaza assault amounted to a breach of the Genocide Convention.<\/p>\n
Colombian May Day demonstrator Sandra Gutierrez, a 38-year-old teacher, welcomed her president\u2019s announcement Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne cannot be an accomplice of the murderers,\u201d she told AFP on the Plaza Bolivar square.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
