{"id":6488,"date":"2024-05-02T18:29:38","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T18:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=6488"},"modified":"2024-05-02T18:29:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T18:29:38","slug":"burkinabe-juntas-denial-of-atrocities-fails-verification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=6488","title":{"rendered":"Burkinabe junta\u2019s denial of atrocities fails verification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>U.S.-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) last week <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2024\/04\/25\/burkina-faso-army-massacres-223-villagers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> soldiers of the Burkina Faso junta of extrajudicial executions of 223 civilians, including at least 56 children, in Nondin and Soro villages on February 25.<\/p>\n<p>The junta denied the accusations, blocked the HRW website, and barred domestic media from reporting the watchdog\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p>On April 27, the junta\u2019s Superior Council of Communication <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/burkina-faso-suspends-voa-bbc-africa-broadcasts\/7585907.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended <\/a>the Voice of America and BBC radio networks from broadcasting in the country over their coverage of the HRW report.<\/p>\n<p>On April 29, the Burkinabe military government <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/burkina-faso-suspends-more-foreign-media-over-hrw-report\/7588551.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended <\/a>another five Western news outlets over the HRW report.<\/p>\n<p>Burkinabe Communications Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo issued a decree, condemning the HRW report as \u201cbaseless\u201d and accusing the rights watchdog of \u201corchestrating\u201d media coverage to \u201cundermine the image of Burkina Faso.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHRW alleges that the Burkinabe army deliberately massacred 223 civilians including more than 50 children in the villages of Nodin and Soro on February 24,\u201d he said. \u201cThe government of Burkina Faso firmly rejects such baseless accusations. The media campaign around these accusations clearly demonstrates the intention of its authors, which is to discredit our fighting forces engaged on the front line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Burkina Faso junta\u2019s denial is false.<\/p>\n<p>The HRW report is based on an investigation that included firsthand testimonies from survivors and witnesses. (Kilaye Bationo\/AP Photo)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The latest HRW report states that \u201csoldiers killed 44 people, including 20 children, in Nondin village, and 179 people, including 36 children, in the nearby Soro village.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Survivors told HRW the junta security forces executed villagers in retaliation for an attack by Islamist fighters on a Burkinabe military and a militia camp outside the provincial capital, Ouahigouya, earlier that day.<\/p>\n<p>One survivor who was shot in the leg said: \u201cBefore the soldiers started shooting at us, they accused us of being complicit with the jihadists [Islamist fighters].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having verified video and photographs documenting the killings and showing the injured survivors, HRW reported that Burkinabe forces knowingly targeted innocent and unarmed civilians, including children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous accusations <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time the Burkina Faso military has been accused of attacking villagers, including children and women.<\/p>\n<p>Reports indicate that the army has repeatedly carried out mass killings of civilians who the junta suspected of supporting Islamist armed groups.<\/p>\n<p>On March 22, an Associated Press investigation <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/burkina-faso-military-junta-jihadis-civilian-deaths-e775658011de4c0b4352f53326f16da3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> a civilian massacre in Zaongo village that claimed 70 lives on Nov. 5, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>On that day, Burkina Faso security forces, mounting pickup trucks and armed with guns and drones, attacked villages, leaving behind a trail of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Describing photographs by a 32-year-old farmer, AP reported scenes of \u201cwomen slain with babies wrapped against their bodies, lifeless children intertwined together, a 2-month-old face-up on the ground with puppies crawling on his tiny frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier investigation, AP reported a <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/burkina-faso-jihadi-violence-extrajudicial-killings-children-ef298323297295b536c5bbd6929fffc6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deliberate killing<\/a> of boys inside the Burkina Faso security forces\u2019 military base about two kilometers northwest of the regional capital Quahigouya in mid-February 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Burkina Faso junta denied responsibility. But AP \u201cdetermined troops in the video were members of Burkina Faso\u2019s security forces, which until recently received military training and hardware from the United States and European Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Soldiers loyal to Burkina Faso's latest coup leader, Capt. Human rights groups have documented cases of what they call war crimes against civilians in the conflict in Africa\u2019s Sahel.(Kilaye Bationo\/AP Photo)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Most attacks \u201cgo unpunished and unreported in a nation run by a repressive leadership that silences perceived dissidents,\u201d AP wrote on March 22.<\/p>\n<p>In another village, a report by the International Crisis Group, a non-profit organization, said: \u201cIn March 2023, residents of Karma in the North <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crisisgroup.org\/africa\/sahel\/burkina-faso\/burkina-faso\/313-armer-les-civils-au-prix-de-la-cohesion-sociale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported <\/a>that the armed forces had killed at least 146 non-Fulani civilians [including women and children] execution-style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last June, HRW accused the Burkina Faso junta of \u201cgrave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of August 12, 1949,\u201d <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/genocideprevention\/war-crimes.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citing<\/a> a key United Nations document for the prevention of crimes and genocide during armed conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) Project <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/acleddata.com\/conflict-watchlist-2023\/sahel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported <\/a>that civilian deaths at the hands of the Burkina Faso junta increased by 77% between 2022-2023.<\/p>\n<p>ACLED figures <strong><a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/acleddata.com\/conflict-watchlist-2024\/sahel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a><\/strong> \u201ca severe escalation of deadly attacks\u201d in Burkina Faso in 2023, with more than 8,000 people killed.<\/p>\n<p>ACLED senior researcher Heni Nsaibia told <strong><a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2022\/3\/11\/how-burkina-faso-became-the-new-epicentre-of-sahelian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Jazeera<\/a><\/strong> in 2021, that the Burkina Faso security forces \u201ckilled almost as many people as the al-Qaeda and ISIL-affiliated groups combined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/bf.usembassy.gov\/joint-statement-on-civilian-massacres-and-media-suspensions-in-burkina-faso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joint statement <\/a>on April 29, the U.S. and U.K. expressed grave concern for the massacres of civilians by the Burkinabe junta in late February, first-hand accounts of which are detailed in the HRW report.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking over the government a year and a half ago, Captain Traore has been working with the Russian Wagner Group mercenaries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Russian President Vladimir Putin shakes hands with the leader of Burkina Faso junta Ibrahim Traore during a meeting following the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg, Russia, July 29, 2023. branded Africa Corps, which has replaced the Wagner group since the death of its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/russian-troops-deploy-burkina-faso-2024-01-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrived <\/a>in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso\u2019s
