Poor relations between the Hispanic nations hit a low on Friday night when Spain\u2019s Transport Minister Oscar Puente suggested Argentina\u2019s President Javier Milei was on drugs.<\/p>\n
Milei\u2019s office responded on Saturday by accusing Spain\u2019s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of bringing \u201cpoverty and death\u201d to his people and threatening Spain\u2019s unity.<\/p>\n
The spat comes two weeks ahead of a visit to Spain by Argentina\u2019s \u201canarcho-capitalist\u201d president. He will attend an event of the far-right Vox party and will be avoiding the Socialist head of government. The two have never had good ties.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sanchez supported Milei\u2019s rival Sergio Massa in the election that brought Milei to power in December and not contacted Milei since the victory. Vox leader Santiago Abascal went to Buenos Aires for Milei\u2019s investiture.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw Milei on television\u201d during the campaign, Puente told a Socialist Party conference on Friday. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it was before or after the consumption\u2026 of substances.\u201d<\/p>\n
He listed Milei among some \u201cvery bad people\u201d who have reached high office.<\/p>\n
Within hours, Milei\u2019s office issued an official statement lambasting Spain\u2019s prime minister.<\/p>\n
\u201cSanchez put the middle class in danger with his socialist policies that bring only poverty and death,\u201d said the statement.<\/p>\n
The government had also \u201cendangered the unity of the kingdom\u201d by making a deal with a separatist party to be able to stay in power.<\/p>\n
Spain reacted with fury.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Spanish government categorically rejects the unfounded words\u2026 which do not reflect the relations between the two countries and their fraternal people,\u201d the Spanish foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government and the Spanish people will continue to maintain and strengthen their fraternal links and their relations of friendship and collaboration with the Argentine people, a desire shared by all of Spanish society,\u201d the statement added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Milei will travel to Spain in two weeks for an event on May 18 and 19 organised by the far-right opposition party Vox, which is in a race with the Socialists in next month\u2019s European elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He is not scheduled to meet Sanchez or Spain\u2019s monarch.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
