Photo Credit: Heather Gershonowitz.<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Screenwriter Bekah Brunstetter chatted about her 2024 Tony nomination for \u201cThe Notebook\u201d on Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Roosevelt once said: \u201cThe future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.\u201d A woman that embodies this quote is Bekah Brunstetter. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Notebook\u201d musical\u00a0is directed by Michael Greif and Schele Williams, and it features music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson, a\u00a0book by Bekah Brunstetter, and choreography by Katie Spelman.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"Watch Moments from The Notebook Musical\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yTOqScYdAvc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A 2024 Tony nominee for \u2018Best Book of a Musical\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Brunstetter has been nominated for \u201cBest Book of a Musical\u201d for \u201cThe Notebook.\u201d On earning this Tony nomination, she said, \u201cIt is so thrilling, and the truth of the matter is that it is also just bittersweet because I am nominated without Ingrid Michaelson and it is really hard to feel separated from her at this stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am still completely proud of the work, and myself. I am just really honored to be nominated, and to carrying this honor for everyone\u2026 for Ingrid, the whole show, and for all of us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am truly so proud of \u2018The Notebook.\u2019 If I don\u2019t make anything better for the rest of my life, I would still feel fulfilled,\u201d she said with a sweet proud.<\/p>\n<p>Brunstetter is also proud of Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett for earning nominations for their work in the \u201cLeading Actor in a Musical\u201d and \u201cLeading Actress in a Musical\u201d categories respectively.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Julieta-Cervantes-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"Maryann Plunkett and Dorian Harewood in 'The Notebook' on Broadway\" class=\"wp-image-3718825\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Maryann Plunkett and Dorian Harewood in \u2018The Notebook\u2019 on Broadway. Photo Credit: Julieta Cervantes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lessons learned from her journey on \u2018The Notebook\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>On the lessons learned from being a part of this musical, she reflected, \u201cI think it reminded me of the importance of family. We slightly shifted the focus in the story from the younger characters to the older characters, and we are all lucky if we still have our grandparents around and if we still have our parents around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, working with Ingrid on \u2018The Notebook,\u2019 and working with these older characters has made me appreciate that mine are still around,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt taught me to stay in touch with them, talking to them and hearing their stories. That has been a big thing that has refocused in my life, for sure,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The digital age<\/h2>\n<p>On being a screenwriter in the digital age, Brunstetter said, \u201cI love looking at \u2018The Notebook\u2019 Instagram account. Every night that we have a show, people go in and they post what they think about the show, and then, \u2018The Notebook\u2019 Instagram re-shares it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery night, I am looking at its Instagram page, and I am just loving and hearing what people think about it, and that really is so gratifying,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love feeling in touch with our audiences in that way. It is really nice to feel connected with them so immediately. It is really cool,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice for young and aspiring screenwriters<\/h2>\n<p>For young and aspiring screenwriters, she said, \u201cWriting can be so competitive. It is so hard to not comapre yourself to other writers, especially when you are starting out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really have to put the blinders on and pretend like you are the only writer in the world and surround yourself with people who love your writing so that you can feel really confident and supported, and so that you can write from that place, as opposed to writing from a place of insecurity,\u201d she elaborated.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Leave The Light On&quot; Single from The Notebook The Musical\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nfOipdB9koU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brunstetter on her writing process<\/h2>\n<p>When asked if she writes with the end in mind, she responded, \u201cI usually do. Obviously, we did with \u2018The Notebook.\u2019 We knew how it was going to end; we had all the material.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically, I tend to build my ideas for all of my projects backwards,\u201d she revealed. \u201cI know what I want to leave the audience with, and then, I just go back from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage of her life<\/h2>\n<p>On the title of the current chapter of her life, she said with a sweet laugh, \u201cIt Me vs. Working Mom Guilt.\u201d \u201cAlso, a year of baked goods,\u201d she admitted. \u201cThat\u2019s the subtitle. I am constantly baking cookies for my kid\u2019s teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Favorite mottos to live by<\/h2>\n<p>On her favorite mottos to live by, she shared, \u201cEven when things get overwhelming, I try and be present and I try to be grateful. I have two little kids right now, and nothing will make you more present and grateful than two little kids who need you. It\u2019s a lot of focusing my energy on what is in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I\u2019ve gotten older, it is about lowering your expectations for yourself and for your projects,\u201d she acknowledged. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about taking things day by day so that you are not constantly feeling like you are not doing enough, which is a classic \u2018working mom\u2019 feeling.
