It marks the days since her cousin was taken hostage by Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>Dariel campaigns almost daily with her mother Rebecca, demanding a deal to bring the dozens of Israelis seized by Hamas during the group&#8217;s <span class=\"link\">Oct. 7 terrorist attack<\/span> back home. Will it be complicated?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dariel goes to one of only six schools in Israel that is not segregated into Arab and Jewish students.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;That night, the school counselor wrote to me,&#8221; recalled Rebecca. &#8220;She said: &#8220;My heart is with you.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was like this wave of feeling felt and heard and seen, and completely secure and confident,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p>At the Hand in Hand school in Jerusalem, children learn both Arabic and Hebrew. History is taught by two teachers \u2014 one Jewish and one Palestinian.<\/p>\n<p>Hanin Dabash also sends her children to the school. She told CBS News it gives them <em>&#8220;<\/em>the opportunity to say what they think \u2014 to talk about their fears, their future, their misunderstanding of what is happening\u2026 I think the kids are normalized to listen to each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have family members of students in Gaza that were killed. She told CBS News that the laser focus on simply listening to one another stems from several core goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want our students first not to be racists,&#8221; she said. &#8220;To acknowledge the different histories and the sufferings of both cultures, and we know that students that graduate from here behave differently in society later.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To get them to that point, no topic can be taboo. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We talk about our fear,&#8221; explained Deputy Principal Engie Wattad, &#8220;and when we see the other side understanding and putting themselves in our shoes\u2026 it&#8217;s deeply comforting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For students like Dariel, that means having difficult conversations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve learned that it&#8217;s hard for us to speak, because a lot of us are scared to share our thoughts,&#8221; she admitted. &#8220;But we need to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-left embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">U.S. pauses bomb shipment to Israel over Rafah concerns<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">03:07<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Principal Meyer doesn&#8217;t attempt to portray her school&#8217;s work \u2014 or any aspect of life in the heart of the troubled Middle East \u2014 as easy, but she said it helps to know that she and her colleagues are working to create a brighter future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The situation in Israel, it&#8217;s not easy,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I think that it&#8217;s easier when you know that you are part of the solution&#8230; It&#8217;s easier that you know that what you do now affects the lives and souls of students. It&#8217;s easier when you talk about it, when you expand your knowledge. I find it harder to be outside of this school right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She knows peace may be far away for her country and for all of her students and their families.
