{"id":8544,"date":"2024-05-10T12:31:37","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T12:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=8544"},"modified":"2024-05-10T12:31:37","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T12:31:37","slug":"departing-georgia-envoy-to-francehits-out-at-foreign-influence-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=8544","title":{"rendered":"Departing Georgia envoy to Francehits out at foreign influence bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em><small>Georgian protesters rally in Tbilisi against a controversial &#8220;foreign influence&#8221; bill &#8211; Copyright AFP\/File Narinder NANU<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Georgia\u2019s ambassador to France, who has resigned over a bill criticised for mirroring repressive Russian legislation, called for the draft law to be dropped on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Gotcha Javakhishvili announced his resignation on Thursday over the controversial \u201cforeign influence\u201d bill backed by the Georgian government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, which has already completed two of three readings in parliament, has come under fire from the European Union, United Nations and United States and sparked protests in the South Caucasus nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am calling for the withdrawal of this bill,\u201d Javakhishvili told French daily Le Monde in an interview published Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a question of principle and honour,\u201d said the diplomat who has become the first senior Georgian official to resign over the bill.<\/p>\n<p>If adopted, the law would require that any independent NGO and media organisation receiving more than 20 percent of its funding from abroad register as an \u201corganisation pursuing the interests of a foreign power\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say the bill, a similar version of which was scrapped last year following protests, mimics repressive Russian legislation that the Kremlin uses to crack down on opponents and could block Georgia\u2019s path to joining the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, our European friends are criticising us, and Moscow is praising us. This is unbearable for me. My country has suffered so much from Russia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEurope must not abandon Georgia because it could become another Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Javakhishvili said that when the Georgian government had re-introduced the bill he had found himself \u201cin a very uncomfortable situation, particularly with my contacts at the Elysee Palace and the Quai d\u2019Orsay,\u201d referring to President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s office and the foreign ministry.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had promised them that the bill had been abandoned and \u201cwould never be revisited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d have a hard time finding arguments to explain to them why it\u2019s back today.
