Nao, nao… Swiss children in a Lausanne creche have some fun with their new robot friend, Nao – Copyright AFP Fabrice COFFRINI<\/small><\/em><\/p>\nRobin MILLARD<\/em><\/p>\nSat in a circle on the nursery floor, a group of Swiss three-year-olds ask a robot called Nao questions about giraffes and broccoli.<\/p>\n
By the time these children become adults, interacting with robots may well be as commonplace as using a smartphone, experts believe.<\/p>\n
So one Lausanne creche has decided to give them a head start.<\/p>\n
Nao has been a regular visitor at the Nanosphere nursery on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology university since the New Year. He is what is called an \u201cinteractive learning companion\u201d rather than a substitute teacher.<\/p>\n
As the children were dropped off, Nao \u2014 who is only 58 centimetres (less than two feet) tall \u2014 stood on a bench to greet them at eye level.<\/p>\n
\u201cHello, my name is Nao. I\u2019m happy to be at the Nanosphere today,\u201d he said, in a child-like high-pitched voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cI left my planet some time ago to come and meet you. I look forward to getting to know you and being able to talk with you in the weeks ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some children walked straight past, some waved, pointed, touched his hand or simply gazed at him transfixed.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018No squabbling!\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat will the children\u2019s future be like? Will they have to work with robots? Very probably yes,\u201d Olivier Delamadeleine, director-general of the Educalis group of nurseries and primary schools in Lausanne, told AFP.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo as we are in a place of learning it is important to get them familiarised early so that they\u2019re used to working with robots,\u201d\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n
Back in the class, teacher Eve L\u2019Eplattenier and the 14 children sat in a circle on the floor with Nao in the middle.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s going to come and explain things to you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you like broccoli? It\u2019s very good for your health,\u201d the robot said.<\/p>\n
L\u2019Eplattenier picked him up and put him on a table. She said Nao would not grow any taller as children do.<\/p>\n
The children gathered excitedly around, some jockeying for space.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo squabbling!\u201d Nao told them.<\/p>\n
Prompted by their teacher, the children tried to catch him out with questions such as, \u201cI am an animal with a trunk. What am I?\u201d When he got it right, they giggled.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Little know-it-all\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Gabriel Paffi, a masters student in robotics, sat in the corner feeding Nao his answers.<\/p>\n
He programmed the robot and is working on how to adapt it for a nursery\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe goal is to make it automated so that he no longer needs me to move around and respond to the children,\u201d Paffi said.<\/p>\n
The first Nao robots hit the market in 2008. Now on generation six, the brand is owned by the Germany-based United Robotics Group and more than 15,000 units have been sold.<\/p>\n
The plan is for this Nao to spend several years in the Educalis nurseries as his capacities expand.<\/p>\n
L\u2019Eplattenier said the children are thrilled when Nao turns up, and have bonded with their diminutive friend.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are curious to see what he will say, what he will do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a companion with little tips and bits of advice.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he will quickly position himself as the little know-it-all of the group.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the parents, they too are keen to see how Nao will settle in.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a good way to help the children progress with new technologies,\u201d said Guillaume Quentin.<\/p>\n
When it was time for Nao to \u201cfly back into space\u201d, each child in turn shuffled towards him to say goodbye and give him a wave. He replied to each by name.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love you. I will come back soon,\u201d he told them.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
