{"id":9577,"date":"2024-05-15T15:41:54","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T15:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=9577"},"modified":"2024-05-15T15:41:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T15:41:54","slug":"social-media-breaks-are-difficult-but-necessary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalpulse.net\/?p=9577","title":{"rendered":"Social media breaks are difficult, but necessary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Nearly half of master&#8217;s degrees have a negative financial return, according to new research by the <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/freopp.org\/does-college-pay-off-a-comprehensive-return-on-investment-analysis-563b9cb6ddc5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity<\/a>, an economic research organization.<\/p>\n<p>The study indicates that many graduate degree programs do not increase lifetime earnings enough to be worth it.<\/p>\n<p>While 23% of bachelor\u2019s degree programs yield a negative financial return on investment, 43% of two-year degrees and master\u2019s degrees fail to deliver a return, according to the study by Preston Cooper, a senior fellow at FREOPP.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper assessed the return on investment for 53,000 degree and certificate programs to determine whether a student\u2019s lifetime earnings outweigh program costs and the risk of not completing their degree.<\/p>\n<p>His findings show that a student\u2019s field of study was the overriding indicator of return on investment at the undergraduate and graduate level.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wsw__embed\">\n<figure class=\"media-image js-media-expand\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n<div class=\"thumb\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"FILE - Students walk past the 'Great Dome' atop Building 10 on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, April 3, 2017, in Cambridge, Mass.\" src=\"https:\/\/gdb.voanews.com\/01000000-0aff-0242-f3b4-08dbb665bcf0_w250_r1_s.jpg\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"ico ico-fullscreen ico--media-expand ico--rounded\"\/>\n<\/div><figcaption>\n<span class=\"caption\">FILE &#8211; Students walk past the &#8216;Great Dome&#8217; atop Building 10 on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, April 3, 2017, in Cambridge, Mass.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Engineering, computer science and nursing bachelor\u2019s degrees have high financial returns on investment, while programs in education, fine arts, psychology and English usually have low returns.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate degrees in medicine and law tend to have strong payoffs. But a large share of master\u2019s programs, including the MBA, frequently have low payoffs, according to Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>Although workers with master\u2019s degrees earn 16% more than those with only bachelor\u2019s degrees, Cooper says the figure fails to account for students who had \u201chigher preexisting earnings potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMBA students typically have high preexisting earnings potential, having often chosen high-ROI undergraduate majors such as finance and economics,\u201d Cooper writes. \u201cSo the MBA adds little value on top of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study indicates that high starting salaries are predictors of high returns on investment. Degrees with starting salaries of $57,000 a year or more deliver the best lifetime returns.<\/p>\n<p>But the return on investment of a degree can vary depending on the educational institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents interested in fields with low average pay can still find some schools that do well transforming those fields of study into high-paying careers,\u201d Cooper University of Southern California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn MBA from Harvard is a likely ticket to a good job,\u201d Tierney told VOA. \u201cAn MBA from the University of Phoenix, less so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But students pursue graduate programs for more than just financial reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome degrees open up careers in fields that students may enjoy, such as in the performing arts,\u201d Robert Kelchen, head of educational leadership at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, told VOA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers can help gain access to social networks or simply help students learn about a topic that is of interest,\u201d Kelchen added.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper told VOA that it might make sense for students in degree programs with low returns on investment to switch majors if they can still graduate on time.<\/p>\n<p>He found the worst outcome for a student\u2019s return on investment is dropping out of college \u201cbecause they must pay for one or more years\u2019 tuition and spend time out of the labor force.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers who fund higher education have a responsibility in ensuring \u201chigher education delivers on its promise of economic mobility,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n<div students with a return on investment, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper\u2019s view is that \u201csome schools should shut down low-ROI programs and reallocate institutional resources to programs with a better return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s definitely this narrative out there that higher education is always worth it, and you should always try to get that extra degree because it will increase your earnings,\u201d he told VOA. \u201cThat&#8217;s reinforced by colleges who make lofty promises regarding their graduate degree programs&#8217; outcomes, which all too
