On Saturday, the president released a grotesque parody of Apocalypse Now, depicting helicopters over Chicago with fiery explosions — a chilling image meant to justify his promise to flood the city with National Guard troops and immigration agents.
In a disturbing twist of bravado, Trump declared, “I love the smell of deportation in the morning,” mocking the suffering of vulnerable communities while treating a major U.S. city as a war zone. He even signed an executive order to rename the Pentagon from the Department of Defense to the “War Department,” an Orwellian gesture more suited to a dictatorship than a democracy.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker rightly called Trump “a wannabe dictator,” after the president threatened to unleash federal force not just on Chicago, but also on Baltimore, New Orleans, and even Portland, which he fantasized about “wiping out.” Such rhetoric lays bare Trump’s contempt for American citizens, reducing them to enemies of the state.
Trump claims he is not a dictator, yet in the same breath insists he has the power to “do whatever I want.” These are not the words of a leader committed to the Constitution, but of a man intoxicated by the idea of unlimited power.
