DELTA Drone Transforms Into a Large Wheel on the Ground

University of Tokyo researchers developed a unique DELTA drone that could one day be used in disaster recovery situations too dangerous for humans. Delta (Deformable Multilinked Multirotor with Rolling Locomotion Ability in Terrestrial Domain) features a ring-shaped body consisting of three linked segments.

The segments all have their own own propulsion module mounted on a rod that allows it to swivel and point toward the hub of the ring. In flight mode, the propellers are oriented upwards and if necessary, all the links can be uncoupled to fly through narrow gaps. When on the ground, the propellers are continuously adjusted by its onboard microprocessor, enabling it to roll forwards or turn left / right.
