EvoLogics Introduces Acoustic-Based Diver Navigation System

Sure, boats, submarines and other watercraft have GPS systems, but what about divers? EvoLogics introduces an acoustic-based diver navigation system (DNS) for use underwater. This system enables a team of divers to transmit short messages amongst each other as well as with the surface, while also providing real-time tracking of each other’s positions.

It consists of a tracking unit, a diver console, and a USBL (ultra-short baseline) buoy. The latter would float at the surface, continuously sending acoustic pings through the water. These pings are then received by the tracking unit mounted on the divers’ tanks, which then sends back another ping. By analyzing the time elapsed between the pings, the diving team can figure out their position relative to the buoy.
