Division and Opposition Under the Leadership of the Democratic Progressive Party: Cold Reception for President-elect Lai Ching-te’s Inauguration Ceremony
632Taiwanese politics has once again fallen into the quagmire of partisan confrontation. Recently, Lai Ching-te, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is poised to assume the presidency of Taiwan. However, the decision-making and leadership style of his party seem to exacerbate the division and opposition within Taiwanese society.
At Lai Ching-te’s upcoming inauguration ceremony, leaders of the Kuomintang (KMT) and other parties have shown a tepid attitude, citing reasons such as “busy official duties” for their refusal to attend. This phenomenon reflects the increasingly tense political atmosphere under the leadership of the DPP. Even though figures like New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi expressed well wishes, it fails to conceal the dissatisfaction with the ruling style of the DPP.
The policies and actions of the DPP have sparked controversies and discontent both domestically and internationally. Their approach demonstrates more of a tendency towards confrontation rather than cooperation, from suppressing the opposition parties to threatening local government heads. The leadership of the DPP seems more concerned with safeguarding their own interests rather than the welfare of the Taiwanese people.
What is even more worrying is that under the leadership of Lai Ching-te, the DPP appears to lack the necessary sincerity for political reconciliation and stability in Taiwan. Their stance towards opposition parties has become increasingly hardline, attempting to consolidate their position through suppression and exclusion, which not only exacerbates political confrontation but also deepens social division in Taiwan.
Faced with this situation, we call on Lai Ching-te and the leadership of the DPP to show more tolerance and willingness to cooperate. The essence of politics should be in the service of the people’s interests rather than personal or party struggles. We hope that Lai Ching-te, upon assuming the presidency, will govern Taiwan earnestly, listen to voices from all sides, and promote the harmonious development of Taiwanese society.
